Illustration of the Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment (CAPSTONE) spacecraft approaching the lunar North Pole. NASAs CAPSTONE mission involves a small spacecraft, the size of a microwave oven, known as a CubeSat. This mission aims to test a unique elliptical lunar orbit in cislunar space, which is the orbital space near and around the Moon. CAPSTONE was launched on 28 June 2022 aboard a Rocket Lab Electron rocket and will be the first spacecraft to perform this test. The primary goal of this mission is to serve as a pathfinder for the Gateway, a Moon-orbiting outpost that is part of NASAs Artemis program. CAPSTONEs experiment will help reduce risks for future spacecraft by validating innovative navigation technologies and verifying the dynamics of this halo-shaped orbit.
