Sioux chiefs. Very often; two or three men formed a war troop and left for weeks or months. Sometimes they'd come back with scalps; horses or women. Then; whatever its size; the war troop knew defeat and there was no survivor to tell the worried women and children the story of the disaster. Photo taken from volume 3 of Edward S. Curtis's encyclopedia (1868-1952) on North American Indians; with a foreword by Theodore Roosevelt. Between 1907 and 1930; 20 volumes were published.
