Tuberculosis of the lung, illustration. Scattered granulomas and tissue necrosis occur throughout together with cavities many of which contain necrotic tissue resembling a cheese-like appearance. Prevention is effected with the BCG vaccine, and treatment of the infection is with antibiotics and various antimicrobial medications. The tuberculosis bacterium is resistant to the tissue macrophages that attempt to destroy it, and will replicate inside macrophages eventually killing these cells resulting in granulomas and necrosis.
