Thaumatrope: in 1825 John Ayrton Paris marketed his magic disc the thaumatrope (miracle wheel); on one side an empty cage is drawn; on the other a bird; the disc is held by a string. By turning it we have the illusion that the bird is in the cage while the eye never sees either the cage or the bird at the same time.
