The Battle of Clavijo, Spain, which legend claims took place in 834 or 835. In fact the battle, between a Christian army and a Muslim army, never happened. The legend claims that St. James, the Apostle of Jesus, who died 800 years prior to the supposed event, appeared on a white horse and spurred the flagging Christian army to victory. St. James, the patron saint of Spain, is known in Spanish as Santiago Matamoros, or St. James the Moor-killer. After a 15th century engraving, possibly by Martin Schongauer.
