The Death of Nelson bronze pedestal sculpture in Trafalgar Square, London, by J.E. Carew. The four bas-reliefs at the foot of Nelson's Column were cast from cannon captured in Nelson's famous battles, and commemorate his four great victories. The Battle of Trafalgar (sometimes called The Death of Nelson), was put in place in December 1849. The others followed, between 1850 and 1852. Nelson is depicted immediately after receiving his mortal wound; Captain Hardy turns back towards him whilst sailors to the left take aim at the marksman who dealt the blow. However, the French marine Robert Guillemard who claimed to have fired the fatal shot survived into the age of photography to have his portrait taken! Below the dramatic tableux of this sculpted scene we see Nelson's famous last instruction to his fleet prior to battle, 'England expects every man will do his duty.'
