Satellite image of Storm Daniel hitting Libya on 10 September 2023. The storm originated from a low pressure system over the Ionian Sea on 4 September 2023 causing severe weather in Greece and Bulgaria. The storm then hit eastern Libya on 10 September 2023, causing catastrophic flooding, particularly in Derna where two collapsed dams led to over 6,000 fatalities and thousands reported missing as of 13 September 2023. Entire neighbourhoods were swept away from the flash flooding and four bridges were destroyed. Over 400 millimetres of rain fell in the region and floodwaters were reported to be as high as 3 metres. The storm then reached Egypt on 11 September 2023 causing moderate rainfall before dissipating. Image obtained by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the NOAA-20 satellite.
