Shingles rash on the shoulder of a patient infected with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), which weakens the immune system. Shingles, or herpes zoster, is a disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus that also causes chickenpox. The virus can remain dormant in nerve tracts that emerge from the spine and become reactivated, affecting the area supplied by the affected nerve.
