The sliver stains the basement membrane of the capillaries (small blood vessels) inside the glomerulus, as well as the capsule (outer boundary) of the glomerulus in black. The stain also outlines the boundaries of the surrounding kidney tubules in black. The tubules themselves contain tubular epithelial cells that stain pink.
