Visualisation of an event candidate to measure the mass of the W boson, detected by the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) experiments at CERN (The European Organization for Nuclear Research) in July 2011. The event shows a W boson decaying into a muon (longer red dashed line) with missing transverse momentum (green dashed line) corresponding to the muon neutrino energy. The transverse mass of the W boson candidate was measured to be 71 gigaelectron volts. In the Standard Model the W boson mass is closely related to the masses of the top quark and Higgs boson. Measuring the W boson mass tests this prediction and the consistency of the model.
