Yvonne Sudden, 14 a Kensington schoolgirl, kisses her coach, Jacques Gerswhiler, after becoming Britain's new women's amateur figure skating champion at Streatham ice rink. She won the title after one of the most dramatic finals in the history of the competition. Millions on TV watched Yvonne start the final free-skating stage nearly eight points behind Erica Batchelor, 20, of Edinburgh,, Yvonne gave-a magnificent four-minute display to notch near-maximum marks. Trying to keep her lead, Erica started her free-skating test with a mid-air leap and almost fell. Seconds later she hit the ice heavily. Those two mistakes cost her the title and she finished second.
