Tough Youth Club Is Reformed -- Some of the boys, who did not take part in the chair-smashing, re-enact the scene for the camera's benefit. One of London's toughest youth clubs south of the River, in North Lambeth, has been changed by an even tougher ex-army sergeant into a centre where boys and girls are learning to be good citizen. It has retained all its old members, and dozens more are joining. Ex-sergeant Mr. Victor Yates, 33, left the army some time ago and took over the club. The members had a reputation for unruliness. Says Mr. Yates; "I have a grand lot of helpers who have made the club into a first class centre". October 07, 1953. (Photo by Paul Popper).
