'Most Beautiful Thing On Earth' -- In these quaint 14th Century dwellings lived the singing clerks of Wells Cathedral. The cottages - known as 'Vicar's Close' - adjoin the Chain Gate, built especially as a passage for the choristers. They have been substantially altered, but for the side chimneys, since they were built by Bishop Ralph. At the extreme end is the Chapel added by Bishop Bubwith. January 1, 1949.
