Rebuilding Drake's Church -- Structural engineers at work on the walls of blitzed St. Andrew's Church, Plymouth. Surveying work has started for the rebuilding of St. Andrew's Church, the Mother Church of Plymouth, Devon, which was gutted by fire during the Blitzes of March 1941. One of the most famous and best loved churches in the country, it was here that Sir Francis Drake worshipped and the Pilgrim Fathers met for prayer before embarking on the "Mayflower" to the "New World". All that remained of this 15th. century church after the blitz was the famous Yogge's tower, the walls and the arcading. February 07, 1949. (Photo by Reuterphoto).
