Fat necrosis of a human breast, light micrograph. Fat necrosis is a nonneoplastic inflammatory lesion characterized by necrotic adipose tissue with foamy histiocytes, chronic inflammatory cells and some preserved adipocytes. Fat necrosis in the breast may result from trauma, surgery or radiation. It appears as a thickened, hardened lump that may cause breast pain.
