Illustration of the human voltage-gated potassium (Kv) ion channel Kv4.2 in complex with its dipeptidyl peptidase-related protein 6 (DPP6) modulator. Ion channels are membrane-spanning proteins that form pores in cell membranes and act as pathways for the movement of inorganic ions into and out of the cell. Kv channels are specific to potassium ions (K+) and are sensitive to voltage changes in the cell's membrane potential. Kv4.2 are mainly found in neurones (nerve cells). Binding of DPP6 regulates the activity of Kv4.2 preventing hyperexcitability of the neurones and the backpropagation of action potentials
