Chinese character moth (Cilix glaucata). It is a relatively small and distinctive moth that when resting will imitate bird droppings. Its flight period is usually May to June and then again in August with two generations. This species occurs in woodlands, gardens and hedgerows. It is found widely across the palearctic ecozone and North Africa. The larvae feed on blackthorn and hawthorn. Photographed in Somerset, UK, in August.
