Nathan S Kline (1916-1983), US psychiatrist. Kline is best known for his pioneering work in psychopharmacology. In the 1950s he trialled the use of the hypertension drug reserpine, which was reported to have sedative effects, for the treatment of schizophrenia, finding improvement in 70% of patients. He went on to investigate drugs including lithium and the monoamine oxidase inhibitor iproniazid for use as antidepressants. This revolutionised the treatment of mental illnesses, allowing many patients who had been deemed untreatable to live much improved lives.
