Acute cellular rejection, light micrograph. Acute cellular rejection of the allografted (transplanted) heart is a T-cell-mediated host response to foreign antigens expressed in graft tissue. The inflammatory response, as seen in this image, consists predominantly of lymphocytes and macrophages encroaching on cardiac myocytes (muscle cells). In severe cases, neutrophils and eosinophils may be present.
