Giant cell myocarditis, light micrograph. Giant cell myocarditis is an inflammatory condition involving the myocardium (heart muscle). Its cause is unknown but it is often associated with autoimmune disorders. It can rapidly progress to heart failure. Microscopically, it is characterised by the presence of multinucleated giant cells and a chronic inflammatory infiltrate within the myocardium along with destruction of myocytes (muscle cells).
