Epiphyseal ossification, light micrograph. During ossification, the epiphysis of long bones is lined by a growth cartilage that shows the same zones as an epiphyseal growth plate, although it is less organised. The mixed bone trabeculae that arise from that cartilage are not parallel, but more disorganised, with a general radial orientation. At the end of development, part of that cartilage remains as articular cartilage.
