Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an amoeba (possibly Pseudoparamoeba sp., yellow) under a fungal hyphae (purple). It is surrounded by bacteria (red) and fragments of another protozoan (beige). Amoeba are unicellular protozoa with a flexible outer membrane that allows the organism to alter its shape, primarily by extending and retracting pseudopods. With these pseudopods they engulf food (bacteria, or other microorganisms). Specimen from the northern Black Forest, Germany. Magnification: x3,000 when printed at 15cm wide.
