Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a freeze-fracture preparation of a plant root with ectomycorrhiza. A mycorrhiza is a symbiotic association between a soil fungus (grey) and the roots of a plant. Both organisms benefit from this association. Ectomycorrhiza grow between the cells of the root cortex, but do not penetrate its tissues. Within the plant cells (brown) are phenol droplets (yellow). Magnification: x1400 when printed at 15cm wide.
