Carl David Anderson (1905-1991), US physicist. Anderson jointly received the 1936 Nobel Prize in Physics for his 1932 discovery of the positron, the antiparticle of the electron. Its existence had been predicted by Dirac in 1928. Anderson found it in the impact products of cosmic rays, energetic particles that impact the Earth from space. He also discovered a short-lived heavy particle, the muon.
