7215324 ALEXEI PISSEMSKI, 1880 (oil on canvas) by Repin, Ilya Efimovich (1844-1930); Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, Russia; (add.info.: 1880//Oil on canvas Alexei Pissemsky (1821-1881) knew a great notoriety as a writer and playwright in the 1850s, notably thanks to his novel A Thousand Souls and his play Bitter Destiny. He was subsequently the target of numerous criticisms and died having lost all literary credit. On commission from Tretyakov, in March-April 1880 Repin painted a portrait of a forgotten, aging and sick Pissemsky. In the spring of 1881, shortly after the writer\'s death, the portrait, presented at the ninth exhibition of The Ambulants, was highly praised by critics.); Photo by Sylvain Collet.
