Preparations being made for the Manhigh II balloon flight with US Major and Air Force biologist David G. Simons (1922-2010, centre) in the balloon gondola. Manhigh II was a part of Project Manhigh, a pre-Space Age US military project that took men in balloons to the middle layers of the stratosphere. Manhigh II launched on the 19th of August 1957 and Simons set a new altitude record of nearly 31,000 metres (102,000 feet) during the 32-hour balloon flight.
