Light micrograph of a pilonidal cyst. A pilonidal cyst is an abnormal skin cyst which contains trapped hairs underneath the skin surface. In this picture, several hair cross-sections (oval yellowish structures) are seen. The surrounding tissue has inflammatory cells (small blue dots in the pink background). This inflammation can explain some of the bothersome symptoms that a patient with such a cyst experiences. Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: 100x when printed at 10 cm.
