Manuel Godoy (1767-1851). Spanish politician, favourite and Prime Minister of Charles IV. The series of actions perpetrated by the British fleet against Spanish ships reached its climax on 5 October 1804, with the blowing up of a Spanish frigate and the apprehension of three vessels carrying wealth from the viceroyalty of Peru, in a battle that took place off Cape Santa Maria. In this context, Godoy read a manifesto to all Spaniards, calling to arms against the English. Manifesto of the Prince of Peace, December 1804. Engraving.
