Conceptual illustration showing the Apollo 17 lunar sounding experiment (ALSE). Radar from the experiment penetrates through the surface of the moon, enabling the study of the upper two kilometres of the Moon's crust. The Apollo 17 mission to the Moon took place from 7 December to 19 December 1972. NASA astronauts Eugene A. Cernan (commander) and Harrison H. Schmitt (Lunar Module pilot) descended to the lunar surface, with Ronald Evans in lunar orbit in the Command Module. The Apollo 17 mission was the last manned spaceflight to the Moon.
