Formerly collegiate; it has double transepts; a choir and main transepts with double aisles; all Early English. These merge almost imperceptibly into a Decorated nave; with an elegant Perpendicular W. front and twin towers as the crowning glory. The vaulting is breathtaking; spanning the entire length of the building; only briefly interrupted by the stately crossing arches. In the chancel is a 14th-century altar screen with a platform above; and to the N. is the superb Decorated Percy tomb. The choir-stalls have canopies and misericords by local carvers; one of which depicts a fox with rosary (representing a Dominican friar) preaching to a gaggle of geese (the congregation). Stone carved minstrels decorate the capitals; eaves and corners of the nave - a veritable visual encyclopaedia of early instruments.
