The present Annunciation of Mary is painted on slate. This material was very popular and used as a painting surface between the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century in Italy; especially in Veneto. It was originally used by Titian and Jacopo Bassano to give their night scenes more spectacular effects.
Among the Venetian painters who have continued to measure themselves against the slate; Sebastiano del Piombo and Jacopo Palma the Younger should be mentioned. The present painting can be attributed to Jacopo Palma's entourage. It shows some similarities with the painting style of this famous painter: the typical motifs of Mannerism of Central-North Italy and the results of Titian's sensual painting.
