Architectural relief (Amazons with Gorgonian shield); clay; hand modeled; pressed; pressed into the mold; clay; Total: Height: 26 cm; Width: 31 cm; ceramics; architecture; Gorgons; Amazons; ornaments; Medusa head; High Hellenistic; Late Hellenistic; This architectural plate represents a preliminary stage of the so-called Campana reliefs. Comparable pieces were found in Metapont. The image field is closed at the bottom by a palmette band and at the top by a geison. To the left and right are half a palmette with a lancet leaf each; which prove that the plate was part of a repeat. Three holes in the picture field were formerly used for the attachment. No traces of paint have survived. Depicted are two Orientals standing opposite each other; kneeling and holding a round shield with a Gorgoneion. The Orientals are probably Amazons. They are dressed in long; belted robes; boots and Phrygian caps.
