Servatius plates; silver; gilt; Object (per plate): Height: 10.7 cm; Width: 13.8 cm; Depth: 2;5 cm; Pictorial works/Applied and fine arts; Reliquaries; Gold-/silversmith work; Church equipment; Saints; Medieval art; Out of gratitude for a healing Duke Heinrich of Bavaria (1386-1450) donated a reliquary bust to the Servatius Church in Maastricht in 1403. It shows St. Servatius; who died in 384 as bishop of Tongern. The eight silver-gilt relief plates originally adorned the octagonal base of the bust; which is no longer preserved. With great narrative pleasure and realistic accuracy; the reliefs depict events from the legend of the saint: 1. the handing over of the mitre and crosier to Servatius as the new bishop of Tongern by an angel; 2. the handing over of the keys for the heavenly gate by Peter; 3. the conversion of Attila; king of the Huns; with the help of an eagle that protects the sleeping Servatius from the sun; 4. Servatius lets a spring spring up; 5. the victory over a dragon; 6. the transfer of Tongers to Maastricht with the church treasure; 7. angels cover Servatius' body with cloths; 8. Servatius forgives the children who lost their hands while stealing grapes from his vineyard.
