Square fields in mother-of-pearl form a chessboard-like pattern on the base. On the inner edge of the foot are marks from the royal workshop of the former Ryukyu kingdom (now Okinawa; Japan): a leaf fan and the Sino-Japanese character for sky; ten ?. Since the 14th century; lacquers have been produced and lacquer goods from all over East Asia have been traded on the archipelago located between the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
