Kertscher Pelike (Achill and Penthesilea); clay; quickly turned; painted (ceramic); alternately fired; clay; painted and fired; total: height: 29.5 cm; diameter: 21 cm; Ceramics; Archilles kills Penthesilea; who rushes to the aid of the Trojans; Egg staff; the Trojan War; Late Classicism (Greek antiquity); This Kertscher Pelike shows on side A one of the famous scenes of the Trojan War; the battle of Achilles with the Amazon queen Penthesilea. Both the pictures on sides A and B and the edge of the mouth plate are decorated with a fine egg stick. Above the picture field a dotted line between two straight lines is added. In the center of the picture on side A an Amazon has sunk to her knees. She has raised her left arm with the pelta; the crescent-shaped shield of the Amazons; in her angled right she still clutches her sword. She wears a short; patterned and belted chiton and on her head the so-called Phrygian cap; a costume component of the Orientals. Opposite her stands in a lunge a naked young warrior; who carries a large round shield in his left hand. He has raised his right hand to a blow over his head. Both look at each other; but they can no longer escape their fate - the viewer of the picture knows that. The scene is part of a larger battle; on the right; an Oriental with his head turned back flees; on the left; another Oriental with a lance inserted gallops towards them; but arrives too late. Side B shows three cloak youths. While the one in the middle holds a strigilis in his hand; the right one; facing him; carries a small box. On the left side the third youth is watching the action.
