Such splendorous tables were not so much furniture for practical use; but served the rising upper middle classes as representative foam furniture. Plambeck was awarded a medal for his work at the first world exhibition in London in 1851. The following world exhibitions greatly promoted the development of handicrafts. Pieces like the Plambeck table were often purchased directly by arts and crafts museums as style models for collections.
