Reading girl; clay; pressed into the form; hand modeled; clay; total: height: 9.4 cm; width: 4.9 cm; depth: 5 cm; ceramics; small sculptures; reading; sitting figure; early hellenistic; On a cube-shaped bench a young girl sits in a long; high-belted chiton and a wreath of leaves in her hair. She reads in a scroll that she holds on her lap. Scrolls were made of papyrus or parchment sheets glued together; on which the text was written in columns. While reading; the scroll was gradually unrolled on one side and rolled up again on the other side. The type was probably most likely to have originated in Attica; but from there it spread quickly throughout the entire Hellenistic world. The surface is more heavily rubbed; and only a few remnants of the formerly colored version have survived; including a reddish-brown coloration of the hair and a white primer. On the back of the bench there is a burning slit; a triangular opening is inserted next to each foot.
