treasure find from Palaiokastron - appliqu?in the form of a maenad with thyrsos and kantharos; gold; chased; gold; Total: Height: 3.7 cm; Width: 2.5 cm; Weight: 1.65 g; garment decoration; maenad; bacchantine; descendants; companion; entourage of Bacchus; Early Hellenistic; High Hellenistic; Greek antiquity; The appliqu?was originally attached to a garment by eyelets. It depicts a maenad leaning against a rock in long chiton and himation. With her raised right hand she rests on a thyrsos staff; in her propped up left she holds a canatharos - both attributes of the wine god Dionysus. On the lower left there is a hole punched through the gold plate; apparently the eyelet originally present here was lost. Almost identical is the appliqu?Inv. 1917.199. Together with similar garment appliqu閟; this piece comes from the find of Palaicastron in Thessaly; discovered and excavated in 1909.
