Kantharos (animal frieze); Formerly Johannes W. F. Collection Reimers (Hamburg); clay; quickly turned; stamped; painted (ceramic); fired (ceramic); clay; Total: Height: 16.7 cm; Diameter: 14 cm; ceramic; animals; animals as ornament; antiquity; The drinking cup is covered on both sides of the raised band handle; which is characteristic of a kantharos; by a flat animal frieze made with the help of a rolling stamp. Depicted is a sequence of a griffin with back and belly wings; a quadruped with a jackal-like head; a horse with a tendril or a human leg (?) from its mouth and a striding buck. On impasto vessels of the 7th century B.C. there is always the representation of a horse or horse-like creature with open mouth and fangs; from whose gullet a human leg protrudes. Whether an early depiction of the man-eating horses of Diomedes was the basis for this is probably not to be answered with certainty.
