Like the American Annie Brigman and the Hofmeister brothers from Germany; he belongs to the international pictorialist artist movement. Demachy was particularly interested in the so-called noble printing processes. He experimented with elaborate photographic techniques such as gum and pigment printing or photo-engraving; which in their formal appearance came very close to the character of painting and graphic art.
