Match Holder; 1850-1900 The Tyrolean region of Switzerland and Austria specialised in producing small wooden trinkets which were mostly sold as souvenirs to tourists. The popularity of Cook's tours in the 1850s opened up the Alpine region of central Europe and had a powerful effect on local woodworking industries. The quality of woodworking varied greatly. This example of match holder carved in the shape of a child's boot shows a considerable degree of accuracy in its detail and; although it would not have belonged to the luxury end of the market; it demonstrates the carver's great pride in his work.
