A chain linked to the imprisonment of Saint Paul is exposed for the veneration of the faithful in a bronze case with a glass window between the altar and the tomb of the apostle. At either end are two serterces with the effigy of emperor Nero (54-68 AD) to recall the fact that St. Paul was a prisoner and martyr when Nero was emperor. Built in 324 above the tomb the Saint Paul the Apostle located along the Ostiense Way; about two kilometers outside the Aurelian Walls surrounding Rome.The basilica was destroyed by the fire in 1823.
