Shanghai; Hongkou District; Liyang Road Villas; Smart Museum: stone plaque with inscription at former site of Guan Zilan (1903 - 1986); Chinese avant-garde painter; The inscription (Chinese; English translation) reads: Inscription: "Guan Zilan (1903 - 30 June 1986); famous modern painter; lived here from 1930 to 1986". She was known as Violet Kwan; introduced western art as Fauvism to China. Her painting Portrait of Miss L. (1929) was exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City in 1998. During Cultural Revolution 1966 she stopped painting and her career ended until re-discovery in the 1990ies. Liyang Road Villas; garden villas along both sides of Liyang Road; were built 1914 and are part of the Model Area. Model Area is a memorial place for revolutionary culture of 1920s to 1940s; writers; unionists; workers; soldiers and politicians; and heroes of the Communist Party of China. Model Area was restored; in 2004.
