Founded in 1881 with 40 inhabitants; Calico first owes its fame to the exploitation of silver and borax mines The population of Calico will reach up to 1200 inhabitants in 1887 with no less than 22 saloons; numerous hotels and even a Chinatown. The 1890s and the collapse of the silver price began the decline of the city which saw its number of inhabitants drop significantly to be completely abandoned in 1907. If it then became a real ghost town; in 1951; Walter Knott bought the town and began its restoration. Calico is located not far from Intersate I15 which therefore connects Los Angeles to Las Vegas.
