Harlequin ladybird larva. Stacked macrophotograph of the larva of the harlequin ladybird (Harmonia axyridis). Originally from Asia, the harlequin ladybird has rapidly become one of the most common ladybirds in Europe. It has up to 22 black spots on a red or orange background. The larva's body is elongate, with the greatest width behind the head and continuously narrowing towards the apex of the abdomen. The segments of the body are clearly separated and equipped with bristles or spines or at least coloured to mimic it. The legs are strong cursorial legs, which allows the active search and pursuit of prey.
