The decoration of the ceiling and the architectural design of the walls of the Silenus Room date from 1775-78. Tommaso Maria Conca (1734-1822) painted the canvas in the centre of the ceiling; which portrays the Sacrifice to Silenus (Silene) ; and the two monochrome frescos on the sides with Silenus Inebriated and Silenus Returns Bacchus to King Midas. The figures of the baccantes; satyrs; and sileni are arranged in an elaborate architectural trompe-l'oeil by Giovan Battista Marchetti (1730-1800).Galleria Borghese (Galerie Borghese; Borghese Gallery)Rome; Italy. 2020.
