Tuscany; city of Colle di Val d`Elsa: Porta Nova; built end of 15th century according to plans of Giuliano da Sangallo; The Porta Nova is also called Porta Salis; Porta Solis; or Porta Volterrana. It was built directly after the siege of the city; in 1479; because the old city gate at this place; the Porta Selva; had been destroyed. it is a superb example of military architecture.
