MONUMENTAL SILVER MODEL OF THE BERLIN VICTORY COLUMN.
Hanau. 20th c. After a design by Heinrich Strack.

Silver; partly gilt. Ivory. On thrice receeding round base columned hall with rosette-shaped relief decor in its centre. On it the monumental column consisting of four fluted drums. A total of 68 gold-plated cannons pushed into the cannelurs. The column ends at the top with a pierced frieze and is crowned by an imposing figure of Victoria with a laurel wreath and field signs in her hands.

The large original for this model was inaugurated in September 1873. The Victory Column was built on the occasion of three victorious wars based on a design by the architect Heinrich Strack and was originally built on K鰊igsplatz. Between 1938 and 1939; it was moved to its present location; the Sternplatz.
The large figure of the winged Victoria; popularly known as 'Goldelse'; received from Friedrich Drake the facial features of Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland; who was Crown Princess in Prussia at the time.
