LARGE PAIR OF GILT-BRONZE CANDELABRA WITH DANCING NYMPHS.
Paris. Presumably end of 18th ct. The model after Etienne Maurice Falconet (1716-1791).

Gilded bronze and white marble. Square plinth on small feet. The base pedestal with cupid frieze all round. Thereon two
dancing nymyphs in antique-like robe. They hold a chalice made of acanthus leaves from
which grow four serpentine branches and a mighty Thyrsos-rod; which is covered in ivy and
crowned by a pine cone; in the middle. Height 91cm. Condition B.

The two girandoles were designed at the time of Louis XVI in the style of the gout
閠rusque. The two very lively figures of the nymphs follow the model of Etienne Maurice
Falconet; of which different versions were created. Copies are found today in the royal
Castle Warschau and in the Mus閑 Nissim de Camondo in Paris among others.Art trade; Van Ham.
