The model for the Bolognese dog; which is presumed to have been the favourite animal of
Augustus III; is first mentioned in February 1735; being included in a list of completed
animal figurines for the Japanese Palais. Like many of Kaendler's animal figures; the
sculpture is characterised by its exceptional naturalistic expression. The wavy; seemingly
moving strands of the coat; the large; curious eyes and especially the open mouth with
carefully worked out details like tongue; palate and teeth; make the dog appear lifelike
and almost alive.Art trade; Van Ham.
